Yak is found at an altitude of eight-ten thousand feet in the cold and deserted plateau of Tibet, Nepal and some northern areas of India. It may be black, brown, white or speckled.


Yak's body is covered with thick, long and rough hair. During the winter season, these hairs become more dense and elongated, due to which it is left outside with rest in the odd winter of Tibet, at a temperature of less than forty degrees. Adult yak is up to 4 feet high and can weigh up to a ton.
